| “ | Despite Haydn*s anxiety that seven successive slow movements might “weary the listener”, the orchestral version of The Seven Last Words became one of his most popular works. Today, though, these sublime meditations are usually heard either in Haydn*s makeshift quartet arrangement, or in the oratorio version he made after his second London visit. If the neglected orchestral original remains the most moving, the choral version is essential listening, above all for the archaic-sounding interlude for wind band that Haydn inserted between the fourth and fifth Words. The period instruments of the Akademie für alte Musik - acidulous oboes, rasping, wailing brass - here give full value to the composer*s extraordinarily bleak, chill sound-palette. In the choral movements, Laurence Equilbey eschews the extremes of anguish and pathos probed by Harnoncourt (Warner Elatus). With more flowing tempos and less stark expressive contrasts, this is a relatively contained, distanced view of Christ*s sufferings. But it is a skilful and affecting performance. If words could be clearer, the choir sings with fresh, well-blended tone, while the fine solo quartet is topped by the aptly plangent soprano of Sandrine Piau. RW | ” |
