Audioslave was an American hard rock supergroup that formed in Los Angeles, California in 2001. It consisted of ex-Soundgarden frontman and rhythm guitarist Chris Cornell and the former instrumentalists of Rage Against the Machine; Tom Morello (lead guitar), Tim Commerford (bass and backing vocals) and Brad Wilk (drums). Critics initially described Audioslave as an amalgamation of Rage Against the Machine and Soundgarden, but by the band's second album, Out of Exile, noted that it had established a separate identity.

The band's trademark sound was created by blending 1970s hard rock with 1990s grunge. Moreover, Morello incorporated his well-known, unconventional guitar solos into this mix. As with Rage Against the Machine, the band prided themselves on the fact that all sounds on their albums were produced using only guitar, bass, drums and vocals; no samples were ever used.

After Audioslave released three successful albums, received three Grammy nominations, sold more than eight million records worldwide, and became the first American rock band to perform an open-air concert in Cuba, Cornell issued a statement in February 2007 that he was permanently leaving the band "due to irresolvable personality conflicts as well as musical differences". As the other three members were busy with the Rage Against the Machine reunion, and Morello and Cornell had each released solo albums in 2007, Audioslave was officially disbanded.



Audioslave is the eponymous debut album by hard rock band Audioslave and was released in November 2002 (see 2002 in music).

The album's music is strongly reminiscent of Rage Against the Machine, with Chris Cornell providing his familiar classic rock-esque wails and croons to the songs. It features the hit singles "Cochise", "Show Me How to Live", "What You Are", "Like a Stone", and "I Am the Highway". The record was certified triple platinum.

"Like a Stone" was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance.

Out of Exile is the second album by American rock band Audioslave, first released on May 23, 2005 internationally and a day later in the United States. It is the band's first and only #1 album on the Billboard 200. Four singles were released: "Be Yourself", "Your Time Has Come", "Doesn't Remind Me," and "Out of Exile".

Critical response was mostly warm, highlighting the fact that the band was working towards defining its own sound, as opposed to just Rage Against the Machine fronted by Chris Cornell. As drummer Brad Wilk explained: "Audioslave the band has arrived. The first record was people from two other bands with history attached. I don't feel that with this record." Some fans prefer it to the Heavy metal previous release, while others were disappointed in its softer approach. The album was chosen as one of Amazon.com's Top 100 Editor's Picks of 2005. "Doesn't Remind Me" was nominated for Best Hard Rock Performance at the 2006 Grammy Awards.

Many songs from Out of Exile were performed at the concert the band held in Cuba on May 6, 2005, 3 weeks prior to the release date, making it the first live performances of the tracks from this album, documented on the Live in Cuba DVD released in October of the same year.

Revelations is the third and, with the departure of lead vocalist Chris Cornell in February 2007, final studio album by American rock band Audioslave. The album was released on September 5, 2006 in the U.S., and a day earlier in the UK (see 2006 in music). Brendan O'Brien, who has produced or mixed the albums of numerous major rock acts of the past twenty years, including Soundgarden, Rage Against the Machine, Stone Temple Pilots, The Offspring, Pearl Jam, Incubus, and Bruce Springsteen, was at the helm for this record. Audioslave had 20 songs written (a few of which were sampled during their 2005 tour), and returned to the studio in early January to finish recording them.

Guitarist Tom Morello described the sound as "Earth, Wind and Fire meets Led Zeppelin".

On July 3, a private listening party was held for fan club members and non fan club contest winners. The album gained a strong fan review, noting a darker tone, and anthemic choruses. Love, life and loss are all themes on the new album. Political activism is also starting to rear its head in Audioslave's music with songs such as Wide Awake, which uses the Hurricane Katrina disaster and George W. Bush as subject matter.

Prior to the album's release, the title track appeared in the video game Madden NFL 2007. The songs "Wide Awake" and "Shape of Things to Come" were featured in the 2006 film Miami Vice.

Musically, the album is similar to Audioslave's previous album, but with a twist. The band incorporates soul and funk influences in many (if not all) of the songs on the album.

Revelations entered the Billboard 200 at the #2 spot with 150,631 copies.

Many of the tracks have not been performed live, as Cornell left the band in 2007. "One And The Same", "Wide Awake", and "Sound Of A Gun" were played by the band during the Out Of Exile tour, and Cornell performed alone recently acoustic versions from "Until We Fall", "Original Fire", and "Wide Awake". Lacking a lead vocalist and with the band's future in question, the remaining members have not toured in support of the album.
